Simple Handmade Birthday Card Featuring Cupcake With Candle
10:37 AMHola, today, I'm sharing a handmade birthday card project that's perfect for a beginner. It features a sweet cupcake digital stamp image and we'll be using simple watercolor techniques to bring it to life. Don't worry if you've never created a handmade greeting card before – we'll take it step by step! You can also easily swap out the cupcake printable for any other cupcake image you love.
Before we dive in, here's a little tip: if you see a graphic or a step you want to save for later, be sure to pin it to your favorite crafting board on Pinterest! It's the best way to build a handy library of ideas you'll actually use. Coz, if you're anything like me, you find a million great ideas online, bookmark them, and then completely forget they exist.
Enough housekeeping. Let's get started!
Your Supply List
Gather your materials before you begin. This is everything I used:
- Digital Stamp/printable: Cupcake with candle (e.g., "Sweet vibes" from Tiny Gold Brush) or your own cupcake image
- White Cardstock: 8.5" x 11" sheet (for base) + scrap for sentiment printing
- Aqua Colored Cardstock: Cut to 3" x 1.25" (this is your mat)
- Watercolor Paper: 110 lb, for printing cupcake image (final image area: 3.75" x 5")
- Digital Sentiment: sentiment, resized to 2.75" x 0.75" before printing
- Sentiment Stamp/Image: (e.g., from the "Sweet vibes" set) or your own pre-printed sentiment
- Watercolor Paints: I used basic kids cake paints in yellow, orange, pink (crimson red), brown, and blue
- Basic Tools:
- Paper trimmer or scissors and a ruler
- Bone folder (or just a blunt object to help make a sharp fold)
- Paintbrushes (a small round brush and a flat brush or medium round)
- 2 cups of clean water
- Paper towel
- Liquid adhesive or a glue stick
Step 1: Prepare Your Card Base (A2 Side-Folding Card)
First, let's make the base for our card. This is a standard size, so it's easy to find envelopes for it.
- Cut: Start with an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of cardstock. Cut it in half at 5-1/2" on the long side to create two 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" pieces.
💡 Pro Tip: Use a heavier cardstock like 110 lb or 120 lb for a sturdy, professional-feeling base.
- Score: Take one 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" piece. With the 8-1/2"side running horizontally, score a line at 4-1/4".
- Fold: Fold the cardstock along the scored line. For a crisp, sharp crease, run a bone folder (or the back of a butter knife) gently down the center at the 4-1/4" mark, then fold.
- Result: A 4-1/4" x 51/2". card that opens on the side, perfect for a vertical (portrait) orientation.
👉
Beginner Shortcut: If you want to skip the cutting and scoring, you can also buy pre-scored, high-quality white A2 side-fold cards at most craft stores. They are ready to use right out of the package!
Before You Print: Understanding Your Dimensions
One of the trickiest parts of card making is getting your layers to fit. For a professional-looking card, you want each layer to be slightly smaller than the one behind it, creating a even border (called a "mat") around each element.
For this card, we will use a standard 1/4 inch border between each layer. Here is how to calculate your sizes before you print anything:
Starting Point: Your card front is 4.25" x 5.5" .
Step 1: The Main Image (The Cupcake)
width = 3.75" and height = 5" You need to resize your cupcake digital stamp so the printed image (including any white space around it) fits within a 3.75" x 5" rectangle.
Step 2: The Aqua Mat
- This strip sits at the top of the card.
- Width: Set the width as : 3".
- Height: Let's make it 1.25" tall. (This is visually pleasing and leaves room for the sentiment).
Step 3: The Sentiment Layer
- We want this layer to sit centered on the aqua mat with a small border.
- Width: Take the aqua mat width (3") and subtract 0.25" to get a 1/8" border on each side.
- Calculation: 3" - 0.25" = 2.75" width.
- Height: Subtract 1/4 inch from the aqua mat's height.
- Calculation: 1.25" - 0.25" = 1" height.
- Final Sentiment Size: You need to print your sentiment so it fits within a 2.75" x 1" rectangle.

Summary of Final Printed Sizes:
Cupcake ImageWidth: 3.75" | Height: 5"

Width: 3.75" | Height: 1.5"
Sentiment Layer
Width: 3.25" | Height: 1"
Width: 3.75" | Height: 1.5"
💡 Beginner Tip: Before you print your digital stamps, open them in your editing software (like Microsoft Word, Canva, or Photoshop). Adjust the image size so the entire printable area matches the dimensions above.
Step 2: Print and Prep Your Digital Printable Images
Now that you know your target sizes, it's time to print!
- Resize your cupcake image: On your computer, resize and assemble the cupcake digital stamp elements, so the image and the white space around it fills a 3.75" x 5" rectangle. I'm using the cupcake from Sweet Vibes Digital Stamp Set paired with flowers from Citrus Squeeze Digital Stamp Set.
- Print it onto your piece of watercolor paper.
💡 Beginner Tip: If you need help with printing and manipulating digital images, there are tons of great tutorials online (like Julie's blog post I bought digital stamp now what)
- A Little Oops: Don't panic if you accidentally print on regular copy paper like I did! You can simply adhere that paper to a piece of cardstock with a glue stick and continue. But for the best watercolor experience, watercolor paper is key.
- Resize and print your sentiment : Create a 2.75" x 1" text box in your software. Position your digital stamp sentiment or type your sentiment (e.g., "Happy Birthday") and center it within the box. Print this onto the same watercolor paper or separate piece of heavy white cardstock.

Step 3: Let's Paint!
Now for the fun part. Don't worry about making it perfect; the beauty of watercolor is in its soft, whimsical look. Let the paint dry between layers.
Phase 1: The Flame & Flower Center
- Wet your brush and pick up a mix of yellow and orange paint.
- Paint the very center of the flower on the cupcake.
- Use a very watered-down version of this mix to give the candle's flame a light wash of color.
Phase 2: The Frosting, Candle & Flowers
- Make a thin, watery mix of pink paint (I used crimson red).
- Gently apply this to the cupcake frosting, the candle, and the flower petals. Don't worry about being perfectly even.
Phase 3: Adding Depth (This is the secret to a 3D look!)
- Let the first pink layer dry completely.
- Now, mix a slightly stronger (less watery) version of your pink paint.
- Add this to the bottom of the frosting folds and in the creases. This creates a shadow and makes the frosting look fluffy and dimensional.
- Add a little of this darker pink to the base of the candle, too.
Phase 4: The Cake & Little Details
- Mix a little yellow and brown to create a warm "cake" color.
- Paint the part of the cupcake that peeks out between the frosting and the wrapper.
- After it's dry, use pure yellow to paint the tiny dots on the frosting.
- Use a very watery version of your brown-yellow mix to paint the cupcake liner. Leave little patches of white paper showing through, especially at the top, to give it texture.
- Use this same watery mix to paint a little shadow/ground underneath the cupcake and the small flower.

Step 4: Assembling Your Card
You're in the home stretch!
- Use your liquid adhesive to attach your beautiful cupcake painting to the card front.
The Final Stripes
- With your flat-tipped brush, mix a watery blue paint with just a touch of green.
- Create simple stripes on the card.
- Attach the aqua strip to the front of your card base, positioned near the top, above the cupcake.
- Adhere your sentiment layer to the center of the aqua strip.
And that's it! You've just created a beautiful, handmade birthday card from scratch.
You Did It!
